Executive Series was one of non-credit event which stressed on soft skill development and leadership enhancement which was mandatory for students of MM FEB UGM. Famous and inspiring speakers were invited to give their insights especially about leadership in the event.
On November 16, 2018, MM FEB UGM in collaboration with MM Student Association and Strategic Club held an Executive Series entitled “Strategic Leadership: Overcoming Future Challenges”. Ir. Tumiyana, M.B.A., the President Director of PT. Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk., walked in as the speaker.
The Master of Ceremony opened the event by asking the audience to sing the Indonesian national anthem and Hymne Gadjah Mada together. Then, Dr. T. Hani Handoko, M.B.A. as the Director of MM FEB UGM Yogyakarta gave an opening speech to thank Tumiyana who had inspiring stories which could be shared on that day. Hani Handoko believed that the students would gain much knowledge and inspiration from the speaker in order to develop their leadership.
The Rector of UGM, Prof. Ir. Panut Mulyono, M.Eng., D.Eng., who attended the event continued the speech to extend his gratitude to the guest speaker and MM FEB UGM as the organizer. “From today’s speaker, you will take away much insights which contribute more for your future preparation,” Panut said.
“Seeing the composition of the human resources, I will not explain any further. We specify the details of our projects. We currently have 247 projects divided into the targeted sectors in power plants investment, bridge, etc.,” Tumiyana opened his lecture referring to his company. “Good leaders should be able to inherit the success to their successors. Wijaya Karya has a habit on its annual programs to share them to all elements of the organization, so that there will be a clear understanding on the goals to achieve for the year in each level of management. We have “CEO Talk” which can be shared to all oil and gas management level and project management level, enabling them to give feedback to CEO and BOD. Hence, there will be more inputs and indicator of the properness and success. The feedback is periodically updated every 3 months,” added Tumiyana.
Hani Handoko who acted as the moderator of the event gave some conclusions; a strategic leader should be able to envision the following 5-10 years condition, know the position in the industry or company competition, and have adaptive strong leadership toward changes as well as be a good risk taker. Some questions rose from the audience were about working experience, millennial competition, challenges in developing the company, and applying strategic leadership in the company.
The 2,5 hour event was also attended by the Vice Rector of UGM, Dr. Paripurna Poerwoko Sugarda, S.H., M.Hum., LL.M, and the Deputy Directors of MM FEB UGM Yogyakarta, Dr. Sumiyana, M.Si., and Bayu Sutikno, Ph.D.
