As Norwegian Ambassador to ASEAN, H.E. Kjell Tormod Petterson visited the MM FEB UGM Yogyakarta Campus and gave a public lecture for 23 selected students from 8 ASEAN countries held in a hybrid manner on Monday afternoon (07/03/2022).
As the Deputy Director of the MM FEB UGM Yogyakarta Campus, Rocky Adiguna, Ph.D., informed that the ASEAN Master in Sustainability Management Program is an initiative of the Norwegian Government. The Norwegian Embassy performed the technical implementation in collaboration with the ASEAN University Network (AUN) and UGM.
According to the Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Alumni of UGM, Prof. Dr. Paripurna Sugarda, the ASEAN Master in Sustainability Management Program is a program held differently. Still, it is very appropriate to embody the spirit of ASEAN and Norway’s commitment to addressing environmental conservation issues. “Collaboration is essential to realize this program,” he said.
In his public lecture, the Norwegian Ambassador to ASEAN, H.E. Kjell Tormod Pettersen, said that political and security cooperation would continue to be encouraged, especially regarding reconciliation and security, good governance, and human rights. Furthermore, economic cooperation in ASEAN countries is conducted within the energy sector and free trade scope. At the same time, the socio-cultural field emphasizes issues of climate change, sustainability in the marine sector, environmental protection, education, and cooperation between ASEAN citizens and Norway.
“ASEAN Master in Management Sustainability currently is ongoing program. This program will help fight marine debris, develop clean energy programs, create peace and security, empower women wisely,” he said.
According to Tormod, there are several future challenges ahead for ASEAN and Norway in strengthening further cooperation. There are reducing the geopolitical tension, economic integration, climate change agenda, green economy, air, and sea pollution, upholding human rights, illicit trade, and mediating conflicts politics in Myanmar.
