The Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) successfully hosted an annual research dissemination day on Friday, December 13, 2024. One research dissemination was titled The Role of Universities in Building Sustainability. The colloquium featured Prof. Nurul Indarti, Sivilokonom., Cand.Merc, Ph.D., a professor of strategic management at FEB UGM and the head of the management department as one of the keynote speakers.

In her presentation, Prof. Nurul highlighted the strategic role of universities in fostering sustainability through three main approaches: creating awareness, shaping policy, and driving innovation. She emphasized the importance of integrating sustainability issues into education, research, and community engagement to address global challenges effectively. “Universities must become hubs for creating awareness, shaping policies, and driving innovations in sustainability. This is not only the responsibility of educational institutions but a shared duty among all stakeholders,” said Prof. Nurul.

During the seminar, Prof. Nurul also promoted a new concentration under UGM’s MBA program: Master of Sustainability Development Management (MASUDEM). This innovative program addresses the growing global demand for professionals who can navigate complex sustainability challenges and implement practical solutions. Scheduled to launch in January 2025, MASUDEM focuses on equipping students with a comprehensive understanding of sustainable development principles, policy formulation, and strategic management. The curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, blending insights from management, environmental and social studies to prepare graduates for leadership roles in both the public and private sectors. The program’s ultimate goal is to produce skilled professionals capable of driving transformative changes toward achieving sustainable development goals on local, national, and global scales.

The event was attended by a diverse audience, including stakeholders from government institutions and private companies, faculty members, academics, students, and the public. The discussions throughout the seminar reflected the participants’ enthusiasm for universities’ pivotal role in leading sustainability initiatives. This seminar is expected to be a starting point for strengthening collaboration between academia, the government, and the private sector to achieve sustainable development in Indonesia.
