Executive Series: How to Build Innovative Operations Strategy Through an Era of Uncertainty

To provide knowledge and insight on how to build innovative operating strategies through an era of uncertainty, MM FEB UGM invited Ardy Nugrahanto Wokas, drg., MPH, MBE, MCSO, Ph.D., CEO of Siaga Medika Hospital Group to the Executive Series, which was attended by more of 650 participants consisting of MM FEB UGM students of Yogyakarta and Jakarta Campus via the Zoom on Friday (24-09-2021).

Eko Suwardi, M.Sc., Ph.D. as the Dean of FEB UGM, in his remarks, expressed his extraordinary appreciation to the students and the Director of MM FEB UGM Yogyakarta and Jakarta campuses. They consistently organize this activity which is a manifestation of MM FEB UGM bringing students closer to practitioners consisting of well-known CEOs in Indonesia. “Thank you, Mr. Ardy, for sharing your knowledge and experience with MM FEB UGM students in the industrial sector, and we hope that what is in the industry or the field can be imitated by students,” Eko said.

As a speaker, Ardy very interestingly told his story while studying at the Harvard Medical School University of Harvard and completing his doctorate at Imperial College London. Ardy said that although his background is a dentist, he rarely has contact with patients and is mainly involved in hospital management. Ardy explained that Siaga Medical Hospital Group has 12 hospitals, but only three hospitals which he owns 100% of the shares. “So my job is not only to control but also to maximize the performance of the three hospitals,” he said. In terms of business value, on average, each hospital can generate revenue of 180 billion rupiahs every year because the services are pretty large, and the product variations are pretty significant, he added.

Ardy told the exciting thing about the business description when dealing with covid-19. At the beginning of the pandemic in Indonesia, where the ministry of health did not yet have guidance, such as the regulation on how to handle patients, caused the death rate almost became daily news because the doctors or nurses did not really know how to protect staff or medical personnel from such virus attacks. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) then provides recommendations with policies that are constantly changing accordingly. Finally, Ardy consolidated with the relevant team and clustered which factors could control and which were not, namely internal stocks, utilization, and global purchasing.

Sometimes it is not easy to find connectivity between the knowledge learned and what is facing the field. Many business people in Indonesia run their business without doing the right step by step. “We should not execute something only by instinct, so for students who are still learning, rest assured that what you learn will be something that is needed when you work later, and the knowledge you learn must implementing to minimize problems in the future”, Ardy ordered. “The assessment must exist, and the strategic conclusion is that the business principles are the same, but how can we run a business properly where cost reduction and efficiency must also be present,” concluded Ardy while closing the event with a question and answer session.
